Pharmacy careers & courses Pharmacy is often considered as a shop (also called Medical Store or Chemist) where medicines are being sold or prepared.

Pharmacy is a the branch of science that completely deals with the doses, preparation, dispensing as well y effects (including safety) of medicines in the professional and academic world. 

COURSES IN PHARMACY

Diploma in Pharmacy (D.Pharm)

It is a course with duration of two years, followed by an internship of three months. Candidate should be from science stream of 10+2 scheme with Physics chemistry as mandatory subjects together with one among mathematics or biology and must equal to or greater than 50%. Age should be >17 years.

After successful completion of the Pharmacy Diploma program, one are often employed in a Pharmacy shop. An individual can even set up their own pharmacy store after they have registering with the PCI (Pharmacy Council of India) and/or the State Pharmacy Council. The diploma course only teaches the fundamental concepts without any specialization.

Graduates of the diploma course can even get admission into the 2nd year of the Bachelor of Pharmacy program (Via Lateral Entry).

Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm)

Candidate should be from science stream of 10+2 scheme with Physics chemistry as mandatory subjects together with one amongst mathematics or biology and must equal to or greater than 50%. Age should be >17 years. All the diploma students are eligible to join the 2nd year of B.Pharm course (via lateral entry). Even though you can not make it to the best Pharmacy colleges within the country, you still need to ensure that the college is approved by both PCI as well as AICTE.

Doctor in Pharmacy (Pharm.D)

Pharm.D is among the newest pharmacy programs, introduced in 2008 by the Indian Government and also the PCI. It’s a 6 years course (with 5 years of study + one-year of internship). A candidate with 10+2 in science stream is eligible for the course. The mandatory subjects they should have are physics and chemistry together with one among mathematics or biology and must score more than 50%. Age should be more than 17 years. The diploma graduates are eligible to join the 2nd year of a B.Pharm course (via lateral entry).

Master of Pharmacy (M.Pharm)

After clearing BPharm successfully the student is eligible to join the course of MPharm. The minimum marks required to be eligible for this course is 50%. The reserved category students (SC/ST, Physically Handicapped) gets a 5% relaxation in marks.

Doctor of Philosophy in Pharmaceutical Sciences

It’s a research-oriented course. The candidates that are eligible to join this after are the ones who have already completed their course in Masters of Pharmacy. For the fellowship and project work, they’ll be able to apply for scholarship through various funding agencies such as-

  • AICTE,
  • UGC,
  • DBT,
  • ICMR etc.

ADMISSION

All admission procedure varies depending on the different colleges and institutes.

Most of the universities provides admission through entrance examination. Some colleges take admissions on the basis of merit in 10+2 exam.

Various states regulate its own entrance examination for granting admission. Admission into postgraduate pharmacy courses is completed through Graduate Pharmacy Aptitude Test (GPAT). It’s the famous national level entrance examination which score is accepted by maximum pharmacy institutions.

There are numerous private and govt owned pharmacy colleges all over India. You need to ensure that the college you want admission in is approved by All India Council For Technical Education (AICTE) and Pharmacy Council of India (PCI), New Delhi beforehand.
